Despite all these torments, history has left us with a truly remarkable monument
The choice of materials used

Just about all of the churches and abbeys in Alsace, be they Roman or Gothic, are built using the same materials extracted from the quarries of the foothills of the Vosges, the pink sandstone of the Vosges. The quarries close to the prosperous area where most of the main religious edifices of Alsace can be found.

Ottmarsheim was too far away from these quarries to be able to use the same stone and so was built in a stone quarried nearby in Brunstatt just south of Mulhouse. This is a white limestone (above) in which all the warm shades of ochre, from yellow to orange or from pink to a light brownish red stand out. A varied palette of colours on which the reflected light of the sun or of the exterior and interior spotlights glints and sparkles.
However, some elements of the monument are highlighted by the use of pink sandstone.
